Whiting Tennis makes paintings that refer to printed matter (wallpaper, posters, screenprints, etc.). Using paint, newsprint collage, and an array of printing techniques, he constructs picturesque landscapes that are reminiscent of theatrical backdrops and stock photography. His pictures celebrate the universal, hence each unique painting appears familiar and manufactured. Embracing images of old houses, barns, buildings, and trees, he crafts sympathetic pictures that are simultaneously charming and humorous.
